The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on prescription drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction, including Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.
The agency said it is removing these products from the list of approved prescription drugs that can be found in more than 100 health plans. The move, which comes amid growing concerns about the effectiveness of older drugs, is "in the public interest" and will go into effect as early as next month.
"The FDA is aware of concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of these drugs and will work with our patients to address these issues promptly," said Dr. Jorge Puente, director of the Office of Generic Drugs and the U. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
In June, the FDA said it had received a request for a voluntary voluntary recall of two products that contained sildenafil, the generic equivalent of Viagra, and its generic equivalent, tadalafil, the generic equivalent of Cialis.
Last year, more than 100 prescription drugs were recalled, including Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Cialis Connect, Viagra Connect 20 mg, Cialis Daily, and Cialis Super Force. Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Cialis Super Force, which contain sildenafil, the active ingredient in the prescription-strength erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The FDA also said the risk of heart attack and stroke increases with higher doses of sildenafil.
The FDA said it has received several reports of people taking tadalafil to treat erectile dysfunction, including men who take tadalafil because they take sildenafil. The FDA said the men who took the drugs had a higher risk for developing heart attacks and strokes than other people who took sildenafil, which is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Tadalafil, a prescription drug for men who have erectile dysfunction, is also being recalled and the FDA said it is reviewing the information and has determined that it is "not an appropriate or safe option for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction."

USES: Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Stendra, Vitaros, and Staxyn are the active ingredients in this medicine. Erection pills are used to treat impotence.
INTERPRETATION: Before taking Erection pills, tell your doctor if you have or have ever had an erection problem. Also tell your doctor if you are allergic to any of the following: medicines, such as sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, avanafil, or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects may include headache, flushing, dyspepsia, nasal congestion, dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, light-headedness, blurred vision, or visual disturbances. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
PRECAUTIONS: Before taking Erection pills, tell your doctor if you have or have ever had pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a high blood pressure, which is often fatal. Your doctor may recommend blood pressure reduction, especially in people with low blood pressure or a history of PAH. Your doctor may also recommend blood pressure lowering medications, such as beta-blockers (such as atenolol, propranolol, atenolol plus metoprolol, or enalapril, or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (such as benazepril, or benralapril), or calcium channel blockers such as bretylium (Eplerenone), or nicardipine (nicardipine), or nicotinic acid.
HOW TO USE: Read the label or package directions for directions before taking Erection pills. Use Erection pills only as directed. Do not use more than the recommended dose or last longer than recommended. If you are elderly or have liver problems, take a blood pressure medicine for 2 to 3 days before and 2 days after Erection pills. Use Erection pills at least 2 hours before or after taking any medication for PAH. Erection pills should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
